SODIUM CHLORIDE commonly known as salt -though sea salt also contains other chemical salts-, is an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl, representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions. Salt is added to food, either by the food producer or by the consumer, as a flavor enhancer, preservative, binder, fermentation-control additive, texture-control agent and color developer.
