Additives

  • E1503 - Castor oil

Castor oil: Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor oil plant -Ricinus communis-. The common name "castor oil", from which the plant gets its name, probably comes from its use as a replacement for castoreum, a perfume base made from the dried perineal glands of the beaver -castor in Latin-.Castor oil is a colorless to very pale yellow liquid with a distinct taste and odor. Its boiling point is 313 °C -595 °F- and its density is 961 kg/m3. It is a triglyceride in which approximately 90 percent of fatty acid chains are ricinoleates. Oleate and linoleates are the other significant components. Castor oil and its derivatives are used in the manufacturing of soaps, lubricants, hydraulic and brake fluids, paints, dyes, coatings, inks, cold resistant plastics, waxes and polishes, nylon, pharmaceuticals and perfumes.

  • E171 - Titanium dioxide

Titanium dioxide: Titanium dioxide, also known as titaniumIV oxide or titania, is the naturally occurring oxide of titanium, chemical formula TiO2. When used as a pigment, it is called titanium white, Pigment White 6 -PW6-, or CI 77891. Generally, it is sourced from ilmenite, rutile and anatase. It has a wide range of applications, including paint, sunscreen and food coloring. When used as a food coloring, it has E number E171. World production in 2014 exceeded 9 million metric tons. It has been estimated that titanium dioxide is used in two-thirds of all pigments, and the oxide has been valued at $13.2 billion.

  • E202 - Potassium sorbate

Potassium sorbate: Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid, chemical formula CH3CH=CH−CH=CH−CO2K. It is a white salt that is very soluble in water -58.2% at 20 °C-. It is primarily used as a food preservative -E number 202-. Potassium sorbate is effective in a variety of applications including food, wine, and personal-care products. While sorbic acid is naturally occurring in some berries, virtually all of the world's production of sorbic acid, from which potassium sorbate is derived, is manufactured synthetically.

  • E211 - Sodium benzoate

Sodium benzoate: Sodium benzoate is a substance which has the chemical formula NaC7H5O2. It is a widely used food preservative, with an E number of E211. It is the sodium salt of benzoic acid and exists in this form when dissolved in water. It can be produced by reacting sodium hydroxide with benzoic acid.

  • E266 - Sodium dehydroacetate

Sodium dehydroacetate: Sodium dehydroacetate is a compound with the formula Na-CH3C5HO-O2--CH3-CO-. It is the sodium salt of dehydroacetic acid. It has E number E266.

  • E321 - Butylated hydroxytoluene

Butylated hydroxytoluene: Butylated hydroxytoluene -BHT-, also known as dibutylhydroxytoluene, is a lipophilic organic compound, chemically a derivative of phenol, that is useful for its antioxidant properties. European and U.S. regulations allow small amounts to be used as a food additive. In addition to this use, BHT is widely used to prevent oxidation in fluids -e.g. fuel, oil- and other materials where free radicals must be controlled.

  • E422 - Glycerol

Glycerol: Glycerol -; also called glycerine or glycerin; see spelling differences- is a simple polyol compound. It is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid that is sweet-tasting and non-toxic. The glycerol backbone is found in all lipids known as triglycerides. It is widely used in the food industry as a sweetener and humectant and in pharmaceutical formulations. Glycerol has three hydroxyl groups that are responsible for its solubility in water and its hygroscopic nature.

  • E558 - Bentonite

Bentonite: Bentonite -/ˈbɛntənʌɪt/- is an absorbent aluminium phyllosilicate clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite. It was named by Wilbur C. Knight in 1898 after the Cretaceous Benton Shale near Rock River, Wyoming. The different types of bentonite are each named after the respective dominant element, such as potassium -K-, sodium -Na-, calcium -Ca-, and aluminium -Al-. Experts debate a number of nomenclatorial problems with the classification of bentonite clays. Bentonite usually forms from weathering of volcanic ash, most often in the presence of water. However, the term bentonite, as well as a similar clay called tonstein, has been used to describe clay beds of uncertain origin. For industrial purposes, two main classes of bentonite exist: sodium and calcium bentonite. In stratigraphy and tephrochronology, completely devitrified -weathered volcanic glass- ash-fall beds are commonly referred to as K-bentonites when the dominant clay species is illite. In addition to montmorillonite and illite another common clay species that is sometimes dominant is kaolinite. Kaolinite-dominated clays are commonly referred to as tonsteins and are typically associated with coal.

  • E900 - Dimethylpolysiloxane and Methylphenylpolysiloxane

Polydimethylsiloxane: Polydimethylsiloxane -PDMS- belongs to a group of polymeric organosilicon compounds that are commonly referred to as silicones. PDMS is the most widely used silicon-based organic polymer, and is particularly known for its unusual rheological -or flow- properties. PDMS is optically clear, and, in general, inert, non-toxic, and non-flammable. It is also called dimethylpolysiloxane or dimethicone and is one of several types of silicone oil -polymerized siloxane-. Its applications range from contact lenses and medical devices to elastomers; it is also present in shampoos -as dimethicone makes hair shiny and slippery-, food -antifoaming agent-, caulking, lubricants and heat-resistant tiles.
